Mini DV Tape Players

The Mini DV is a compressed digital video cassette tape format used in digital camcorders to record high-quality video. While the video camera has a playback feature, some people desire to use a dedicated mini DV tape deck for playback rather than the controls on the camera.  A miniDV tape player can save the camcorder from unnecessary wear and tear during the playback and editing process.

Rewind Faster

In addition to using a Mini DV tape player deck to play back a recorded tape, it also provides an excellent way to rewind the tapes, once they've reached the end. Although it may be a bit inconvenient for you to pop it out of your video recorder to use it in this way, the rewind mechanism is much faster than the one on the camcorder.

Stand -Alone Decks and Portable Players

Some Mini DV tape players come in the form of stand alone tape decks, which are well-suited for both home or studio use.

There are also a number of portable Walkman-style Mini DV tape players that are perfect for taking with you wherever you go. Portable players are ideal for quickly reviewing raw video footage in the field, or to transfer video onto your computer or laptop for editing. It is also good for watching any pre-recorded Mini DV tapes, as it can easily be taken on the road for long trips.

Convert to Different Digital Format

Mini DV tape players allow you to easily convert the digital format into a number of other formats. Simply transfer the recorded media from the tape to your computer via FireWire, and easily create AVI files, or store the data to burn onto a DVD. This is the perfect way for you to be able to make home movies, and with some good video editing software that is available on most computers nowadays, it is actually quite easy to do.

Available Models

Other forms of digital media such as DVD, flash drives, and hard disk drive (HDD) media are now used more than the mini DV tapes.  However, mini DV tapes are still widely used and will continue to be so for a number of years. While it is certainly harder to find new models of mini DV tape players on the market these days, it is certain that until everybody converts over to the new formats, the players that are necessary to drive mini DV tapes will still be available.
